Antique Edward Helb, Railroad, PA Patented "American Combined Level & Grade Finder" Inclinometer
Fine 24 inch HELB Patent July 12, 1904 THE AMERICAN Combined Level and Grade Finder
This complex device is essentially a gravity inclinometer (a device that shows deviation from true vertical or horizontal), but it also incorporates conventional level vials, a compass, and a sighting tube
Incorporating these features into the tool gave carpenters, bricklayers, mechanics and others the ability to lay out grades and angles, and ascertain the heights of objects by using the complex scales on the cardboard dial behind the weighted indicator
The compass enabled one to perform simple surveying in conjunction with trigonometry tables
This device was known erroneously as a "Railroad Level" due to Helb's PA town name
The cardboard dial has seen some environmental wear over the years, which his not unusual given how and where it was used
There is extensive use of brass on the device to house all of the instrumentation
None of the glass face plates have any cracks and are nice and clear with no scratches
The weighted inclinometer needle moves smoothly
The compass works as it should but sticks sometimes
The two spirit bubble level vials are intact and fully functioning
There is a full coverage brass plate on the bottom edge
U.S. patent no. 764809 July 12th, 1904 Canada patent no. 90,643 Sec. 20th 1904 paent approved Great Britain by Edward Helb, Railroad, York Co., PA
