The business was continued by John Rabone and his (John's) grandson, Eric Rabone
The firm operated under the name of John Rabone and Sons c1784-1953
RABONE & SONs MAKERS is stamped on the rule's edge, and the No. 1206 is stamped on the front between the 2 and 3 in. mark
This rule is known as a 'Cordage Rule' or Gauge and was primarily used by riggers and seamen to measure the diameters of rope and cables, and to provide them with essential information as to weight per foot, breaking strength, etc.
The overall condition of the Boxwood and Brass is Excellent in that there is no damage, all of the markings are very dark and strong
The Rule has an Excellent antique patina
The sliding brass caliper works as it should with a nice dovetail fit
