Antique W. Johnson - Newark, N.J. Scribe Tool Marking Gauge Wood
Circa 19th Century
Double scribe pins
William Johnson Sr. started his company in 1830 in New York City and moved the business to Newark, NJ, in 1833
According to Bacheller's American Marking Gages, Johnson probably stared making gauges as early as 1830 and continued throughout the century
Late 19th century advertising by the company makes no reference to gauges and the business had expanded into an extensive tool inventory by that point
This Slitting Gauge is in Original Condition with Very Minor Wear from Use and Age
The Cutter is held in place with Brass Wedges consistent with Johnson's construction
The Johnson Mark is clear represented on the Fence and the Stem is 7 1/2" in length
