This type of caliper was used by instrument-makers to get a measurement where a shelf or other "wall" was in the way of a regular caliper
It was patented by L. Kaplan, No. 1194182
In the text of the patent Kaplan, calls out that these calipers are "especially adapted for the manufacturing of violins"
The demarcations are in 100th of an inch and are accurate
They allow for measurements from .010" to 2.00"
