Vandegrift stated in his patent “The object of my said invention is to produce a wrench adapted to the place of the ordinary monkey wrench, which shall not include the screw feature common to such wrenches. Said object is accomplished by providing one rigid and one pivot jaw, a loop or clip extending from said rigid around said pivot jaw, and a sliding wedge adapted to pass between said loop or clip….”
