Civil War Era Handwritten Ledger Springfield and White River Junction, VT.
An antique handwritten ledger. This manuscript account book has many pre and period Civil War entries from 1859-1863.
The page measures 7 1/2” x 10”. This was bound in a ledger.
These entries were written by ledger’s owners J. & J.C.Holmes who appear to be day laborers or a contracting partnership.
The first section of entries are recorded in Springfield, Vt, April 1859.
The 2nd section June 1859 – October 1863 are in White River Junction, VT.
The entries reflect day to day expenses- fare to Springfield, telegram, rubber boots, cords of lumber as well as labor and contracting expenses-rivets for cylinder, bags of pegs, making castings, boarding horse, etc.
Many names of customers are listed with the names sometimes repeating throughout the accounts ledger. The pages are in good condition for its age and are sure to be a valuable addition to any collection of historical ephemera about daily life.
