So what was the purpose of this saw?

Log or Timber Splitting - Some double-blade saws were used in logging or timber framing, where two blades helped make controlled cuts.

Joinery & Dovetailing - In fine joinery, a double-blade saw could be used to make perfectly spaced cuts for dovetails or tenon joints.

I’ve not seen one before, so don’t know, but it is a special and different saw to add to a collection
