The Elgin Tool & Socket Co. was formed in 1895 to produce the "Live Alligator" wrench by Henry A. Smith's patent of June 8, 1897. Production of the wrench passed to the Star Mfg. Co. in 1899.  This example is in Very good working 'used tool' condition with wear to the finish

The Elgin Extra Jaws Alligator Wrench is an old bicycle wrench that can turn pipes and rods that regular wrenches can't. The wrench is named for its shape, which resembles an alligator's mouth. Pipefitters often used alligator wrenches to remove or fit air and water piping from locomotives.
