Vintage Lufkin No. 372 & No. 372 (36-1/2) Boxwood Brass Folding 12 Inch Rulers With Caliper
The vintage Lufkin No. 372 36 ½, is a highly collectible boxwood and brass folding caliper rule dating from the 1920's. This example is stamped with the alternate number 36 ½, which mimics the traditional numbering layout of the Stanley No.36 ½. The ruler unfolds to 12", and incorporates an integrated sliding brass caliper mechanism on one end used for precise thickness or diameter measurements. Single alignment pin intact. Made in USA.
Lufkin No. 372 Caliper Folding Ruler 12" (without 36 ½ designation) has a brass extension on outer leg very nice and crisp overall condition. Will glow with a cleaning. Single alignment pin intact. Imperial gradations are clear. There is a small raised bump on the flat brass slide, it serves as a thumb or fingernail grip—helping you pull the slide out and move it when measuring. Made in England.
They appear to be the same basic rule, with different model-number markings. A 1929 hardware catalog lists it as “No. 372 (36½)” under one description—supporting that these are equivalent designations, rather than different sizes.
Both refer to a 12-inch, two-fold boxwood caliper rule, with a brass sliding caliper and graduations in eighths, tenths, twelfths, and sixteenths. “36½” is a model designation, not its length.
