The author writes, life on the farm during the 1930's was an unforgettable adventure for me. As a youngster in grade school, every activity throughout the year had a special meaning. There was spring plowing and planting, haymaking, grain harvesting, fall plowing and planting, and finally, corn harvesting. Although tractor power was used for some of the heavy work, most activities were performed by horses. My father had four of them on our farm.
Threshing was unquestionably the biggest and most eagerly-awaited event of the season. The sight of that formidable rig rounding the bend of the road, lumbering slowly toward the lane that entered our farm, was a thrilling prelude to the activities which were about to begin. I always watched spellbound the spectacle of bundles moving endlessly on the self-feeder, the grain streaming down the bagging spout, and the straw shooting out of the blower and settling onto the
stack.
